Infinite Power Fanfare: A Full Mugen Showcase In One EG Hatch

We have to admit: The reason why there’s not many Hondas on Street63 is mainly because the team is somewhat alien to the rather popular front-wheel drive hatchback. We understand the popularity of these things, but it’s impossible to talk about them with experience considering we haven’t actually had the chance to get into the thick of VTEC ownership. Still the ubiquitous Honda Civic is a pillar and lifeblood of the local aftermarket, and we’ll take any opportunity to learn about these vehicles in-depth – especially from the people who walk the talk for their builds.

Errol Bueno has been in the Honda game for quite awhile, having been operating Kaizen Japanese Parts and Accessories since 1997 and having background in sourcing automotive parts from japan going earlier than that. His experience with ever-popular Honda platforms has since grown to a point where their shop has become known as a legitimate authority when it comes to sourcing, identifying, and fitting rare Honda aftermarket pieces. The proliferation of counterfeit pieces these days have made their knowledge somewhat of a highly useful resource for the local Honda community, and Errol has set out to inform aspiring Honda builders about all the rare pieces for these vehicles.

This Civic EG6 SiR is a clear showcase of Errol’s expertise in the field, as the trained eye will be able to identify all the rare Mugen pieces smattered around the whole car. Dressed in Carnival Yellow paint and signature Mugen stripes to match the original demo car, the EG actually has a fair amount of Honda Access pieces around the exterior to compliment the Mugen front lip and side steps. Items like the Stanley Projector Fog Lights, parking bumper pole, wind visors, and retractable side mirrors all come as Honda Access options for the EG back in the day. All small details, yet all sought-after 30 years after their production.

The exterior party piece is this unique set of Mugen NR10 wheels. These are effectively the holy grail of 4x100 Mugen wheels, and were originally used as lightweight options for racing specification EFs and EGs back in the day. These wheels were so important to Mugen’s lineup back in the day that they even had a whole catalog dedicated to this very wheel – a piece of literature Errol conveniently has to show us for proof. To bring further emphasis for these rare wheels, a set of Mugen Showa N-One Coilovers give the EG a proper lowering to bring its stance closer towards the old EG racecars in the 90’s. Covered by the unique clutch disk-like NR10s are a Mugen 300mm Brake Kit up front and a rear Spoon 262mm brake kit.

Originally this EG was built with what could possibly be the best attainable B-series motor from any production Honda: The DC2 Integra Type R’s B18C5. Now you’ll wonder why that coveted motor was ditched for a humble B16A – a motor that is found stock on the EG6 SiR. That’s because this particular motor is an N1 race-spec B16A, and was procured with only 5000kms on the clock. Again a small detail that would be overlooked by an untrained eye, but is actually another grail piece for the true Honda nerds. The motorsport-oriented B16 was then treated to a host of Mugen goodies like a Formula Valve Cover, an air intake system, a 5-point reinforced engine mount set, as well as a 4-2-1 gymkhana N1 stainless steel exhaust manifold. B16B Type R Camshafts bump up the profile and lift of the cams as VTEC engages, while an equivalent P30 N1-Spec ECU keeps things in check for the rest of the motor. A Type R 4.4 final drive OEM transmission with LSD further keeps track of laying down proper traction to the pavement. Exhaust gasses flow from the Mugen header all the way back to the signature Mugen Twin-Loop chambered exhaust.

Peeking through the brown glass wrapped around the EG will drive the astute Honda fan nuts with all the rare items laid out in the interior. This EG6’s yellow exterior is flanked with the complete zenki EG Yellow Gathers interior trim set. The cool bit here is Errol took the time and effort to make bespoke clear covers for all the trim pieces to protect them from the elements. True show car moves right there.

The yellow cherry on top is a set of yellow Recaro SR3s sourced from a kouki DC2 Type RX Final Edition, these grail seats round out the full yellow theme. A USDM LHD Gray dashboard also matches the grey contrast trim of the Gathers interior for good measure. Again another small detail that would be overlooked by the rookie builder – this is all the result of decades of being in the Honda game after all.

No Mugen setup is complete without the iconic FG360 “Mickey Mouse” Steering Wheel. This steering wheel has since skyrocketed in price and is now a piece that can command hundreds of thousands of pesos in good condition. Errol’s set comes complete with the equally rare (and expensive) leather center pad to give the wheel an optional ‘premium’ feel – and there’s more surprises in store later on.

The FG360 wheel would usually be matched with a Mugen cluster on EKs, but unfortunately Mugen never made one for the EG. That said, a Spoon 240 km/h cluster signed by Ichishima-san himself is more than appropriate to fit instead. Other than that pieces like the shift knob, leather boot, pedal set, and rear view mirror cover are all from Mugen as well.

We would normally conclude here with a paragraph that rounds out how awesome this full Mugen EG6 Civic is despite its humble roots, but you see Errol had other plans for us during the evening of this shoot. Popping the trunk and its Honda Access Tonneau Cover unravels an almost literal treasure chest full of rare Honda Memorabilia. Here we were treated to a proper history lesson from what is effectively a Honda museum on wheels.

Perhaps the most prominent artifacts in this collection are the FOUR OTHER Mugen FG360 steering wheels bundled up, some with leather pads and some in standard trim. Biggest parts flex we’ve seen by far for sure. Aside from that though, we were treated to a bunch of random memorabilia from Honda Access and Mugen including mint catalogs, and the most random optional accessories for the 90’s Japanese Honda consumer.

Did you know Honda Access made shampoo? Nope, neither did we.

Honda used to spoil their clients with a variety of tools and items that further enhance the car ownership experience. Everything from a compact vacuum, Honda-branded tool sets, waxes, and even Honda Access ETC cards for the expressways. The variety of products available before may sound quirky by today’s standards, but back in the day these were all available in japanese dealerships – and Errol took the effort to complete all these period-correct relics and literature for diehard Honda fans to go back to.

Beyond building what is effectively a complete Mugen catalog EG Hatch with more parts in tow, it’s admirable to see the dedication and in-depth knowledge behind much beloved platforms like the Honda Civic. This is the kind of quality we want to see out of more Honda owners out there – to do the car justice by living up to its rich history and pedigree.
